Designday a hit – but what happened to the hedonism?

Over 1200 chauffeured guests descended on 18 Auckland design venues (in Ponsonby, Newmarket, Parnell and Eden Terrace) to sample the city’s most beautiful products at Urbis Designday over the weekend.

Thirty branded taxi vans kept them moving around the worlds of graphic design, street art, photography, sculpture, architecture, fashion, product design, and interior design.

“The two day celebration of design was a great result for the team,” said Urbis ed Federico Monsalve. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of our wonderful presenting partner Resene, and strategic partners Fisher & Paykel and Stoke Fireplace Studio, plus our transport partner Lexus.

“All of our partners completely embraced the ethos of Designday, recognising and supporting the role design plays in bringing joy, wonder and ease to our urban lives.”

The tourists lapped up the sunny, warm weather – and braved the odd shower. One fan was a regular – West Aucklander Paul Hafner.

“It was an interesting day – as always,” he told M+AD. “Although I had the impression that some of the hedonism of the past has disappeared in favour of a more contemporary trade-fair style.

Hafner and Dee Trivedi took the photos.
