Liquor sector puts moderation in the picture

NZ Alcohol Beverage Council exec director Nick Leggett was the voice of commonsense as he fired a shot at “sensationalist” headlines about liquor consumption in a NZ Herald opinion piece published this week (scroll down for the link).

“The headlines – like 10 glasses of wine a week can cut two years off your life – sound terrifying,” he writes. “But what the headlines fail to tell us is that those who don’t drink at all, actually die earlier than those who drink moderately.

“This is because drinking moderately results in improve cardiovascular health. Independent study after study shows this to be true.

“If you read carefully the details in the latest study [link, below], what they are actually saying is what we already know – drinking sensibly is okay but it you drink too much, then bad things can happen.

“All major studies still point to our Ministry of Health guidelines as being sensible.”
