Injured by irony

Several readers have written to M+AD referring to our Cafe Reader comment that “there ain’t a cent in it”, pointing out that the print title contains paid ads. The point, dear readers, is that this comment was intended to convey irony – not penury.

Of course there’s ads in each issue – and let’s give those folks our thanks for supporting what has always been Jim Wilson’s labour of love.

So, let’s hear it for … Christchurch rehearsal studio Beat Box, Ponsonby Rd retailer Mag Nation, the Auckland Art Gallery, Wellington’s Bats Theatre, and the Play it Strange Trust.

These advertisers – like Wilson himself – are in it because they support the effort. The revenue, however, would barely pay for the Cafe Reader’s staples. While Phantom itself is a profitable enterprise, its offshoot is just as clearly a major print undertaking with a tiny revenue stream.

Hence, “not a penny in it”.
