Herald on Sunday & ODT star in big readership poll

The Herald on Sunday and the Otago Daily Times stand out in the latest Nielsen National Newspaper Readership Survey as the only daily or weekly newspapers to post an increase in readership.

Compared to the previous period (year ending Q3 2016), the HoS readership rose from an average 316,000 to 320,000, and the ODT’s from 87,000 to 88,000 – outstanding results in today’s competitive and increasingly converged media environment.

All other daily and weekly titles either slipped – by very small margins – or held their own (these included The Press, and The Waikato Times).

The NZ Herald remains the most-read daily newspaper in New Zealand, posting an 11.5% result (previously 11.7%).

The Nielsen poll was large by any standard – 11,000 people were interviewed to compile this report (which covers Q1 2016-Q4 2016). Of these, 75% were questioned face-to-face, while 25% were interviewed online. There were 3.7 million people 15+ in NZ during the survey period.
