AUCKLAND, Today: WPP media agency Ikon NZ has been appointed as the communications agency for both Zuru and Rascal + Friends, effective immediately. There was no pitch; the incumbent was Independent Media.

Zuru is the global toy phenomenon created by the three Kiwi entrepreneurial Mowbray siblings, while premium nappy brand Rascal + Friends is the brainchild of Mowbray family friend Grant Taylor.

The Mowbrays also made headlines in 2016 when they paid $32.5 million for the Dotcom mansion in Coatsville.

Zuru global marketing director Renee Lee said: “The decision really came down to Ikon’s thinking; they impressed us with their level of category understanding, and their strategy on how we could reach and engage our dual-target of parents and kids efficiently and effectively”.

Ikon’s vision is what sold Rascal + Friends co-founder/ceo Grant Taylor. “We had been looking for a company to keep up with its rapid growth while offering forward thinking. After an extensive search, Ikon showed an exciting vision that fits with our edgy millennial brand focus and connection to our customers.

“We pride ourselves on doing things differently and can’t wait to start the journey together.”

Ikon managing director Zac Stephenson said: “It goes without saying we’re incredibly excited to work with such dynamic and rapidly-growing NZ brands. We’re very proud to be entrusted with their ongoing communications.

“Ikon’s successes are thanks to its fantastic team, and their passion to creatively connect brands and products to consumers. Our environment is one of support and we’re all united in our belief in positively influencing culture, by creating consumer attention, not just awareness, and ultimately driving business results for our clients.

“2018 was a stellar year for Ikon, bringing an impressive array of talent on board, being appointed to the above clients in addition to Avis Budget Group, and orchestrating several important campaigns for existing clients.

“To cap things off, the year concluded with a complete refresh of Ikon’s brand identity, with the new livery rolling out in the final week.

“We’re all looking forward to seeing the work we’re currently producing come to light soon, and welcoming new clients who buy into our talent, thinking and culture. Stay tuned for more news on the latter very soon.”
