AUCKLAND, Today: Eyes and Ears is adding three fresh creative voices to its Freelance Director Roster: Sophie Black, Johnny Barker and James Anderson — all bringing something unique to the table.
The announcement follows the studio’s recent 10-year celebration and continues its momentum, welcoming filmmakers known for distinct perspectives, creative flair and an ability to tell stories that really land with audiences.
Eyes and Ears is built on collaboration and heart. Their story-led approach remains central as they expand with directors who bring their own style, craft and imagination to every piece of work.
“With our Director Roster, we’re always looking to broaden the creative lens,” says Calvin Sang, Founder and Director. “We’ve worked with and watched each of these directors before and know just how much thought, imagination, and care they bring to every project. They’re not just talented – they’re great people to collaborate with.”
Sophie Black brings heartfelt storytelling and emotional honesty to every shoot. Her strength lies in unearthing natural performances and embracing Kiwi awkwardness across film, docos and campaigns for Adidas, Mitre10 and Burgen.
“The main thing I hear about my work is that it has heart. Moving an audience to feel something – happy, sad, angry, whatever – connecting on an emotional level is always my goal.“ says Sophie.
“I love doing what I do, and I’m greedy for more. Let’s make something rad!” – Johnny Barker
Johnny Barker’s background in sketch and performance shines through his blockbuster-style work, mixing high-energy action with character-driven comedy. You’ve likely seen his stamp on projects for BMW, Samsung and Air NZ.
“I love doing what I do, and I’m greedy for more. Let’s make something rad!” adds Johnny.
James Anderson delivers stylised, inventive work across genres. From TAB to Tourism New Zealand, he’s known for his bold visuals, playful perspective and ability to shape rhythm in unexpected ways.
“I take the work seriously, but not myself. I believe great ideas need room to breathe and a few bad jokes along the way,” says James.
“It’s not just about finding skilled directors,” Sang adds. “It’s about finding people who bring curiosity, generosity, and a drive to make something great. Sophie, Johnny and James fit right in – and we’re genuinely excited for what’s ahead.”
