No pressure, just popcorn – The Police recruitment drive with a twist

AUCKLAND, Today: New Zealand Police and agency EightyOne have unveiled a recruitment tool with a twist — and popcorn. It’s an eye-catching way to spark interest in policing while giving potential recruits a taste of the job.

A decommissioned Police car has been transformed into a mobile mini-cinema, touring the country as part of the latest recruitment campaign. Inside, it screens episodes of Ride Along — the behind-the-scenes series showing real policing in Aotearoa.

Part documentary, part entertainment, Ride Along gives potential recruits an unfiltered look at the job. Now, with the cinema-on-wheels, that experience is more immersive — and more accessible — than ever.

Senior Communications Advisor for Police, Flora Muirhead says, “We love exploring innovative ways to cut through the noise and connect with future recruits. Upcycling a Police car gives new life to one of our most recognisable brand assets.”

Chris Appelros of EightyOne adds, “Joining the Police is a big decision. This car gives people the chance to hop in, sit down, and see the job up close — no pressure, just popcorn. It’s equal parts curiosity, education, and conversation starter.”

The cinema car follows other unconventional Police recruitment moves, including Police-liveried double-decker buses and a fully wrapped Auckland commuter train — all designed to boost applications and show the impact of policing.

Over the coming months, the cinema car will pop up at schools, job expos, and community events across Aotearoa.
