AUCKLAND, Today: Prime Minister has smashed records, pulling in $417,000 in its first week at the box office. Cinemas report sensational responses, with some audiences even breaking into spontaneous applause after screenings.
The milestone puts it ahead of other big local hits like Sir Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old ($240,000 in 2018) and Roger Donaldson’s McLaren ($300,000 in 2017). The record-holder remains Chasing Great (2016), made by the same team.
More than politics, Prime Minister paints an intimate picture of Rt Hon Dame Jacinda Ardern. It captures her vulnerability, resilience, and sacrifices while leading through a terror attack, a volcanic eruption, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
From becoming only the second leader to give birth in office to reshaping global ideas of leadership, Dame Jacinda’s empathy and strength shine through in a way rarely seen on screen.
