AUCKLAND, Today: A billboard campaign in Christchurch has been paid for entirely in Bitcoin — possibly a world first. Localcoin ATM, New Zealand’s fastest-growing crypto ATM provider, teamed up with Jolly Billboards to make it happen.
The site, on the corner of Springs Rd and Main South, directs drivers to a nearby BP with a Localcoin ATM. The payment was made entirely in Bitcoin, signalling crypto’s leap from digital wallets to the real-world streets.
Localcoin ATM helps everyday Kiwis buy and sell cryptocurrency through its growing network of ATMs. With more than 100 in New Zealand alone, the goal is to make crypto accessible, visible, and part of everyday life.
One of the billboards chosen is Jolly’s CH-D6 site in Wigram, a prime location with long dwell times at the lights. Perfect for catching commuters’ attention and pointing them to the nearest Localcoin ATM kiosk.
“Localcoin ATM have an incredibly future-focused model, and their proactive approach made this campaign happen in minutes.” – Jonathon Drumm
“We’re not just providing access to digital currency,” said Philip Plotnicki, Marketing Manager at Localcoin ATM. “We’re helping bring it into the mainstream. Working with Jolly Billboards made perfect sense. They’re fast, flexible, and forward-thinking.”
Founded just over four years ago, Jolly Billboards has become one of New Zealand’s cheekiest direct-to-market outdoor media players, with a network of classic and digital sites nationwide.
Jonathon Drumm, GM of Jolly Billboards, said the deal was a sign of what’s coming. “Localcoin ATM have an incredibly future-focused model, and their proactive approach made this campaign happen in minutes.”
“Is there a Jolly coin in the works? Let’s just say we have our top men working on it.”
With crypto adoption on the rise, transactions like this could become increasingly common. Traditional billboard advertising might just be the unexpected stage for the next wave of media innovation.
