Supermarket giant Countdown has chosen to support a Women’s Refuge initiative – created their agency Saatchi & Saatchi late last year – that allows visitors to its website to access The Shielded Site, a portal enabling victims of family violence to safely seek help and access critical information without fear of detection.
Countdown is New Zealand’s largest online retailer with 120,000 visits to its site each week. Anyone in an abusive relationship who is seeking support or advice can now safely visit the Countdown website, click on the Shielded Site icon, and be provided with vital information without leaving a browser trail.
Countdown joins a group of New Zealand businesses including The Warehouse, ASB Bank, Sorted and Z Energy who have added the tab to their sites.
“Anyone in an abusive relationship can now safely visit the Countdown website, click on the Shielded Site icon, and access vital information without leaving a browser trail.”
Dr Ang Jury, CEO of Women’s Refuge says: “Having the Shielded Site available on Countdown’s website is hugely significant for this initiative. When we launched, our ambition was to have the Shielded Site available everywhere and importantly, in the places people would visit in the course of a typical day.
“With Countdown being one of New Zealand’s most visited sites we’re now able to safely connect with thousands more people who could potentially need our support,” says Dr Jury.
The Shielded Site is an expandable iFrame that can sit on any host website and contains all the vital information a victim needs to ask for help, protect themselves online, keep themselves safe or plan a future free from violence. The site itself never appears in a user’s browser history, keeping them safe from a controlling partner and allowing them to get the information they need.
The Shielded Site appears as an icon on a partner’s website. When a victim clicks on it, a small window overlay containing The Shielded Site will appear. The site can then be closed just as easily without affecting activity on the host site.
