AUCKLAND, Today: The New Zealand television industry is mourning the loss of one of its greats, with the passing of Andrew Shaw—TV legend, producer, and long-time champion of local content.

Shaw’s career began in the 1970s as the charismatic host of Here’s Andy, later renamed Hey Hey It’s Andy—a staple of kids’ TV that made him a household name.

He moved behind the scenes in the decades that followed, producing everything from comedy to classical ballet, and helping raise millions through the much-loved Telethons of the ’70s and ’80s.

In the early 2000s, Shaw stepped into a leadership role at South Pacific Pictures, where he helped launch New Zealand Idol and drove major co-productions.

He later returned to TVNZ in executive roles, where he helped shape content strategy and brought international hits to local screens as Deputy Director of Content.

In 2020, Shaw was named a Television Legend at the NZTV Awards. A year before his retirement, he was recognised as Industry Champion by SPADA—celebrated for a lifetime of service to the screen industry.

His legacy is one of passion, creativity and unwavering support for New Zealand storytelling. Andrew Shaw leaves behind a powerful mark on the media landscape that will be felt for years to come.
