AUCKLAND, Today: Whisky lovers, get ready to raise your glasses—Scapegrace Distilling is officially dropping its award-winning core whisky range in Aotearoa this World Whisky Day, May 17.

They’re launching two single malts—Anthem and Vanguard—both already picking up major awards overseas. Now it’s NZ’s turn to try the good stuff.

Vanguard’s 46% ABV version won gold at the 2025 World Whisky Awards. Anthem’s 46% version took gold at the 2024 World Whisky Masters. Not bad for a local drop.

Daniel McLaughlin, Scapegrace Co-Founder, says these whiskies are proudly New Zealand made and have been years in the making.

“This is an exciting day to be a whisky fan. We’re extremely proud of Anthem and Vanguard, and the fact that they’ve already picked up international awards is a testament to how exceptional they are,” said McLaughlin.

“The products showcase the best of New Zealand, having been distilled and cut with pristine Central Otago glacial waters and made using locally grown barley, including our distinct Manuka smoked variety.

The result? A rich, highland malt-style whisky that’s elegant and smooth—but with a Kiwi twist that sets it apart.

One of those twists is Manuka smoked malt. Instead of peat, they use native Manuka for a lighter, more complex smokiness.

“The smokiness we get from Manuka is complex and dry, with eucalyptus and forest floor style notes. These intricacies bring a lighter and more versatile smoke to our whisky that also lets the cereal from our new make shine in a balanced profile.”

Anthem and Vanguard are Scapegrace’s first full-time whiskies after years of limited releases. Anthem’s even landed in 132 Waitrose stores across the UK.

“This is a key step for us as we grow our whisky reputation. We’ve been receiving huge demand for our whiskies internationally so we’re looking forward to seeing the reaction from whisky lovers in New Zealand.”

You’ll find both whiskies in stores now, with a suggested price of $89.99.
