Minecraft goes prehistoric with BBC Earth

AUCKLAND, Today: Hot off the back of Planet Earth III and Frozen Planet II, BBC Earth and Minecraft Education are teaming up again — and this time, they’re going prehistoric with Building With Dinosaurs.

More than 25 years ago, the BBC introduced Walking With Dinosaurs, one of its most iconic series. In 2025, it’s making a big return — and students get to join the action with a Minecraft twist.

The new Building With Dinosaurs challenge puts learners in the boots of paleontologists. They’ll dig through dirt and sand to uncover dino-blocks hidden beneath their feet, just like in the series.

Students will explore different types of dinosaur features — skin, eyes, teeth — then use their finds to build models of three featured creatures: Spinosaurus, Lusotitan, and Triceratops.

Guided by detailed skeletons, they’ll bring their dino models to life in a virtual museum. The more dino-blocks they discover, the more epic their creations become.

Once the builds are complete, students can pose their dinos for a photo shoot in immersive settings. Expect dramatic backdrops and a few roars — Spinosaurus, say cheese.

“This interactive classroom gaming experience lets students step into the world of dinosaurs in a fun and engaging way.” – Kirsty Wilson

To level up the learning, a downloadable fact sheet shares key info about the three dinos featured in the game — covering diet, size, habitat and more to support accurate builds.

Kirsty Wilson, Showrunner for Walking With Dinosaurs said, “We’re proud to team up with Minecraft Education to give children around the world the chance to interact with iconic dino characters inspired by Walking with Dinosaurs.

“This interactive classroom gaming experience lets students step into the world of dinosaurs in a fun and engaging way, learning how these incredible creatures lived and ruled the Earth millions of years ago.”

Justin Edwards, Director of Learning Experience, Minecraft Education said, “Minecraft Education is delighted to bring this amazing dinosaur experience to students.

“This world, created in partnership with the BBC Studios Walking With Dinosaurs team, brings STEM skills into classrooms by creating a deeper connection with the world of palaeontology, and natural history. We know that dinosaur fans are going to love it!”

Minecraft Education offers a growing catalogue of classroom content — helping students around the world explore subjects like science and sustainability through hands-on, creative gameplay.

Building With Dinosaurs will be available in schools worldwide from 24 June. You can stream Walking With Dinosaurs now on ABC iview in Australia and watch on TVNZ in New Zealand.
