AUCKLAND, Monday: Stuff ceo Sinead Boucher has called on the New Zealand government to follow Australia’s lead and impose a news code on US tech giants, according to reporter Daniel Dunkley, writing for indie online news site BusinessDesk.

Dunkley writes: “Australia’s new law, designed to force social media and tech platforms to pay for news content, has brought Google and Facebook to the negotiating table in recent weeks, marking a radical shift in the country’s publishing landscape.

“Australia has set a good model for the world.”

“Boucher hopes the progress made with the tech companies across the Tasman will prompt NZ ministers to take action, and address the imbalance between the multinationals and local news publishers.”

Boucher told BusinessDesk: “Australia has set a good model for the world, which is absolutely going to be transformative in protecting journalism. We really want the [New Zealand] government to get on with it.”
