HAWKE’S BAY, Today: Te Mānia has taken out one of New Zealand’s top architectural honours at the 2025 New Zealand Architecture Awards, adding to its earlier hospitality win at the NZIA Hawke’s Bay/Gisborne Architecture Awards.
The project, completed in late 2023, is managed by Craggy Range and sits just minutes from the winery, offering three distinct spaces shaped around the Hawke’s Bay landscape.
Designed to push the boundaries of a traditional home, Te Mānia reflects the Peabody family’s vision for bold design, lasting quality, and a strong connection to the land.
“We hope that visitors will feel something raw and visceral, something a bit out of the ordinary and perhaps a little magical,” says Nicholas Stevens, co-design lead.

The centrepiece is the sculptural Te Mānia Room, a pavilion with sharp forms and deep openings that mirror the ridgelines of Te Mata Peak, creating a dramatic setting for dining and gatherings.
The Sleeping Houses are set into the earth and linked by open pathways, drawing cues from the flow of the Tukituki River. Textural interiors soften the cave-like forms, giving guests private retreats surrounded by native planting.
David Peabody Senior of Craggy Range says the recognition reflects the project’s deeper purpose. “Te Mānia was never just about creating another place to stay, but about designing an experience that couldn’t exist anywhere else, and one that speaks to the landscape. Nicholas perfectly blended the natural beauty of the unique location with thoughtful architecture.”
Te Mānia now joins Craggy Range’s collection of boutique vineyard cottages and premium lodges, offering a distinct option for guests seeking design-led wine experiences in Hawke’s Bay.
The award comes ahead of Craggy Range’s next expansion, a new on-site luxury lodge scheduled to open in early 2026, marking another step in its evolving hospitality vision.
