Former TV3 and 60 Minutes journalist Alistair Wilkinson is joining TVNZ as the new executive producer for Seven Sharp.

Wilkinson has 20+ years’ experience in television news & current affairs. He has worked as a reporter (including a stint at TV3), producer, newsreader, and newsroom manager both here and in Australia.

He has spent the last nine months as head of news at Local Focus, a video journalism project funded by New Zealand On Air. Prior to that he was the NZ news director for Sky News.

“Alistair is a journalist’s journalist with a sharp eye for a really good story,” said TVNZ head of news & current affairs John Gillespie. “He’s also a highly experienced and talented producer with the leadership skills and drive needed to take on one of the most challenging jobs in TV.”

Wilkinson says he’s looking forward to working with the Seven Sharp team to develop the show (which attracts an average audience of more than 400,000 NZ viewers).

“It is a privilege to have been selected for the role,” he said. “I believe good journalism matters now, more than ever before. I’ll be focused on leading a team which uncovers and tells more of the stories that matter to New Zealanders, in ways which inspire our audiences.”

Wilkinson takes up the role in July.
