From February, Sky TV will offer – and pay for the infrastructure – to caption some of its programmes on Prime, with a focus on NZ on Air-funded and primetime content.
“Sky’s commitment to making its content more accessible is a huge step for the deaf community,” said Media Access Charitable Trust ceo Wendy Youens, who with trust member Paul France was in Parliament on Tuesday night when Broadcasting Minister Amy Adams made the announcement.
The trust, which is fully funded by NZ On Air, promotes captioning across Australia & NZ – in NZ, the actual service is provided by the trust’s operational arm Able, NZ’s only TV captioning and audio description service.
The trust and Able currently provide captions for ONE news bulletins and a wide range of programming across ONE and TV2, with a selection on TV3 and FOUR; they also provide audio descriptions on selected programming on ONE and TV2.
And yes – Able are also keen to caption television commercials and online content.
