Today M+AD pays tribute to two legends who passed away last week, having left the world a far better place than they found it – singer Aretha Franklin and NZ journalist Warwick Roger.

Franklin left behind a legacy not just in music, but in advertising.

Songs like Natural Woman (written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin) and Respect (Otis Redding) were the soundtracks for many commercials over the years.

She sang the praises of both Coke and Pepsi – the latter a miraculous, soulful ad, if ever there was one (scroll down for the links).

This is Aretha at her soulful best.

Warwick Roger founded Metro magazine in 1981. It was great back then, and still is now.

Current Metro editor Susannah Walker said Roger was a trailblazer” for New Zealand journalism.

As the magazine evolved, so too has the city,” she said.

NZ Herald ed Simon Wilson (a former Metro editor) said Roger had been a magnificent editor and journalist. It was the privilege of my career to edit the magazine that he founded and made so great.”
