Did you get caught in the storm on Wednesday night? Not the weather bomb, but the social media one brewed by the #SMCAKLS 2015 – New Zealand’s first social media awards – organised by Social Media Club Auckland.

Over 350 people turned up for #SMCAKLS (pronounced ‘Smackles’) at Sweatshop Brew Kitchen armed with brollies and smartphones, to celebrate New Zealand’s sharpest, most engaging social media campaigns. The work was judged on levels of engagement, social influence and the creative use of social networks to successful effect.

The big winner was Chorus Gigatown, which took out the Microsoft Most Effective Social Media Campaign. “This was a super tough brief, educating people about a confusing and technical subject and getting signups,” the judges said. “However not only did this campaign achieve the business goals they brought communities together all over New Zealand. All through social media.”

The other winners included Spark Snapchat Roadie, Charlies Straight Up Cola, and Burger Burger Blind Dates (scroll down for the details).

In only its second year, #SMCAKLS 2015 attracted over 100 entries in seven categories, with small businesses as well as some of NZ’s biggest brands vying for that desirable object of every brand’s affection – the #SMCAKLS hashtag award. (Yes. It actually is a hashtag!)

Adding credibility to #SMCAKLS are its sponsors – some of the biggest names in global and local business: Facebook, Microsoft, Vodafone, Uber, House of Travel, The Goat Farm, The Biz Dojo, Interlike.
