AUCKLAND, Friday: The November issue of Healthy Food Guide magazine – the top-selling food title in NZ – will be the last one in print. After nearly 15 years in operation, the brand will continue online.

Founding editor/chef/editor-at-large Niki Bezzant said: “A top-selling locally-produced and owned magazine by can’t survive in this market. I am still struggling to get my head around it.

“This will affect quite a few people. The lovely editorial team at HFG full of creative, dedicated people, will be no more. And of course all the contributors: the writers, stylists, photographers and nutritionists, and that includes me too.

“I feel really sad for MD Phil Ryan – but I really admire him wanting to end things ethically and on his own terms.”

“I’m feeling quite sad today. HFG has been a big chunk of my life. I feel really sad for Phil [Healthy Life Media Ltd MD Phil Ryan] but I really admire him wanting to end things ethically and on his own terms.”

The magazine has been printed for 15 years and provides consumer-focussed information on healthy food with a focus on nutrition as the basis of good health.

Bezzant told Stuff the magazine had fared better than others in the market, holding its position for a relatively long time. However, over the last couple of years, the decline of print media had caught up with the magazine, she said, which had seen readers migrate online and become less willing to pay for content.

She said it was still the top-selling food magazine, with a current readership of around 290,000.

Ryan said the company would continue to invest in its website to serve that digital audience with “evidence-based, expert advice on healthy editing and improving lifestyle”.

“For those who prefer the print version of the magazine, we are expecting the Australian edition of the magazine will be in shops from late November,” he said.
