MediaWorks has announced the appointment of Australian, Michael Anderson as their new CEO – taking up the job from late this month. Anderson is currently Chairman of Oztam and oOH! Media and a non-Executive Director of Fairfax Media.

He replaces Mark Weldon , former head of stock exchange operator NZX, who took the job in August 2014 after MediaWorks went into receivership the year before. He resigned in May. Under his leadership the company lost a number of high profile personalities like John Campbell, Hilary Barry and Carolyn Robinson who famously Tweeted “Goodbye Weldon. Don’t trip on the ruins you created as you leave”.

Prior to his tenure on Boards, Anderson spent seven years as CEO of one of Australia’s largest commercial radio groups Austereo (now Southern Cross Austereo) and before that as their Group Director, Sales.

Rod McGeoch, Chairman, MediaWorks said: “On behalf of the Board, I am thrilled to welcome Michael to MediaWorks. This is a pivotal time for the media industry and with many years of high profile media experience – as a CEO, a Board Director and in Sales, Michael brings the perfect credentials to lead MediaWorks through these dynamic times.”

Michael Anderson said: “MediaWorks is a company with strong brands and a strong history in New Zealand. With the global disruption in media continuing, this an excellent time to join and lead MediaWorks through a difficult but exciting period.”

David Chalmers, who has been Acting CEO since May will be leaving the business later in the year to take on the role of CFO of Spark NZ.
