The Magazine Publishers Association has issued its call for entries for the 2017 Magazine Media Awards, which aim to celebrate innovation and success across all magazine media.
The MPA has run an annual awards programme since 2002 to inspire excellence in the magazine media industry and the 2017 awards offers new categories, heavyweight judges, a simplified entry process and the promise to accurately reflect a changing industry.
This includes changes to some of the existing categories, plus two new awards to acknowledge the emerging multi-platform nature of magazines. New or revised categories include:
Best Digital Brand
This recognises true excellence in the development of digital media brands, whether websites, apps, e-commerce platforms, or social media pages. Judges will be looking for publishers that serve their user communities engaging and relevant content, find new, innovative ways of distributing that content, experiment with creating content through a range of media channels, and have commercialised their digital audience whether through advertising, subscriptions or some other way.
Entries can be standalone products and do not have to stem from a printed product, though our judges will also be looking for any success in leveraging brands across multiple platforms. Brand-funded websites are also eligible for this category.
Best Magazine 360°
For a magazine brand that demonstrates the vitality of the brand across the entire content ecosystem to connect with audiences via multiple platforms and touchpoints.
Best Publishing Innovation and Brand Extension
The winner must demonstrate an initiative that demonstrates innovative thinking and execution for a magazine brand or brands. This could be experiential, digital (including social) or physical or a combination. It could be based on audience or advertiser growth or both.
Best Rising Brand
Awarded to the best rising print or digital magazine brand that is able to demonstrate innovation and has been able to find and appeal to new audiences and create new revenue streams. This could be a new brand launch or a brand relaunch.
Rising Star
The Rising Star award has been divided into two categories – commercial and editorial. It is awarded to the person new to the industry whose input has made the most impact on their team or publication. Nominees must have been in the magazine media industry more than 12 months but not longer than 36 months, and may be from any discipline.
Best Use of Video or Audio
Awarded to the publisher/magazine that has demonstrated the best use of video or audio content as a key or only element in either an editorial or commercial context.
Overall, the MPA says it will be seeking to recognise those who have adapted to today’s age beyond the page, while valuing the fact that exceptional and engaging storytelling will always form the basis of success in the industry.
