Colenso BBDO (22), FCB (15), DDB Group (10), True (8), Special Group (7), Clemenger BBDO (7), Barnes Catmur & Friends Dentsu, Saatchi & Saatchi (4), bcg2 (3), JWR (3) led the way in the Effies 2016 finalists list, unveiled by CAANZ this morning.

Also amongst the action are Sugar & Partners, and TBWA (formerly Whybin\TBWA), and OMD with two apiece, and one spot each to .99, Republik, PHD, FutureBrand, and MBM.

The winners will be announced at The Langham Auckland on Thursday 20 October.

The theme for the 2016 Effies is ‘Showcase your science’ – recognising that great creative thinking prospers from strong strategic foundations. “A well planned campaign has clarity of purpose, insight-rich consumer understanding, defined success metrics and smart media thinking,” said Simon Lendrum, CAANZ immediate-past president and MD and JWT.

“Great science gives art a chance to succeed. The Effies are our opportunity to share our science, and demonstrate to New Zealand business that there is method to effective communications.”

A panel of 150 expert industry judges in Auckland and Wellington assessed entries from around the country to select 102 finalists across 17 categories. Judging to determine the Bronze, Silver and Gold Effie winners in each category will take place on September 29, carried out by a further 77 judges.

Selections will also be made for the paper that deserves title of ‘The Hardest Challenge’.

All Gold Effie category winners will also be eligible for the Grand Effie, which is awarded to the campaign that achieved the most extraordinary commercial result for its client. The winner will

also receive $100,000 in TVNZ airtime, thanks to sponsor TVNZ.

Prominent UK judge
This year’s executive judging panel includes well-known strategic planner Merry  Baskin, from the UK. Founder of Baskin Shark, a brand consultancy focusing on brand strategy and communications development, Baskin has won several US Effie awards and judged the European Effies.

While in New Zealand, she will be speaking at The Annual Effectiveness Function in association with TVNZ, on October 18 at AUT and presenting a half day “wisdom-workshop” in Auckland on October 13.
