Deloitte Awards find new home at APN

The Deloitte Top 200 Business Awards – the former cash cow and jewel in the crown of AdMedia’s doomed owner Mediaweb – has passed its partnership rights on to APN New Zealand.

Now in their 25th year, the Deloitte Top 200 were originally created by AdMedia and Management magazine publisher Reg Birchfield Awards to celebrate New Zealand’s most outstanding large businesses and the people who make a vital contribution to New Zealand’s economy and future prosperity.

The New Zealand Herald and Newstalk ZB will now promote, organise, manage and co-host the annual black tie awards dinner with Deloitte. Mediaweb’s former Events Organiser Tania Vela and Editorial Executive Gill Prentice, who were both closely involved with the Top 200 for many years, helped with the handover to APN.

The Mediaweb Receiver (McDonald Vague) was involved in the transfer, taking a fee for the next five years. It is believed Deloitte agreed to this arrangement to avoid getting into a legal battle with the Receiver over the disputed ownership of the event.

APN, as media partner, has no ownership stake in the event, which will eventually become Deloitte’s exclusive IP.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Deloitte on the most prestigious corporate business event in New Zealand,” said APN NZ Media CEO Jane Hastings. “It’s a momentous year for the event and we know the Herald and Newstalk ZB will deliver fantastic profile across print, digital and radio.

“APN is confident the partnership will elevate the Deloitte Top 200 Business Awards to be even more successful than it already is.”

Deloitte CEO Thomas Pippos says Deloitte is excited to have APN on board as partner. “APN has a strong presence and deep reach into the New Zealand business community and proven experience in organising successful corporate events,” he says. “We’re looking forward to working together to continue to build on the heritage of the Top 200 as the pinnacle of corporate recognition in New Zealand for the next 25 years and beyond.”

An online content hub for the Top 200 Awards will be hosted on the nzherald.co.nz business section.

Finalists for the 2014 awards will be announced in the last week of October and the winners crowned at the black-tie awards dinner on 27 November.

About the Deloitte Top 200

The Deloitte Top 200 Awards were established in 1990 and are held annually to recognise and applaud outstanding individual and management team performances among New Zealand’s largest companies and trading organisations.

The Top 200 award winners emerge from the annual listing of the 200 largest corporations based on revenue, and a separate listing of New Zealand’s Top 30 financial enterprises based on asset value.

The lists comprise public listed and unlisted companies, New Zealand subsidiaries of multinational companies, cooperatives, societies and state-owned enterprises (SOEs), plus private companies prepared to supply audited accounts.

From the Top 200 index, significant contenders are identified for a series of awards. A thorough and comprehensive judging process follows with the winners announced at a black tie event held annually in November.
