FCB Media NZ has won one of only five Best of 2017 Awards at the global Festival of Media Awards in New York for their Virtual Coastguard media idea for Maritime NZ.

The awards, introduced in 2017, recognise the best media ideas from all Festival of Media awards globally in 2017. They are non-entering categories based around the four pillars of the festivals: Insights, Media, Content and Technology. The 2017 winners from all Festival of Media Awards – including APAC, MENA, LatAm North America and Global – were in contention for the ultimate accolade, the Best of 2017.

FCB Media’s innovative partnership with Facebook and Google to geo-fence New Zealand’s entire 15,000km coastline for Maritime NZ won Best Use of Technology. The system provides boat users with behavioural nudges to put their lifejackets on when they’re out on the water, and has helped achieve record lifejacket wearing.

FCB Media were the only New Zealand media agency to make the Best of 2017 shortlist, and Virtual Coastguard was one of a select few shortlisted twice.

The award caps a strong year of recognition for FCB Media, with the agency winning Media Agency of the Year and Best in Show at the NZ Beacons for the second year running as well as double gold at the Festival of Media Asia Pacific.

FCB Media MD Rufus Chuter said: “It’s incredible really. Just looking at the shortlist makes you appreciate the quality of media thinking globally so to have topped the list is pretty special.

NZ media agencies have gained great global recognition this year, so it’s just further endorsement of the quality of media thinking we have here. A great end to a special year!”
