Type bible taps Strategy Creative redesign work

New Zealand agency Strategy Creative has been recognised by the Tokyo Type Directors Club for its rebrand work for Dalman Architects. 

Strategy redesigned a full brand identity for Dalman last year and used a bold red and striking use of type as core elements. The oversized “D” has become an instantly recognisable mark for the Christchurch-based architecture firm.

The work has been selected to feature in the Tokyo Type Directors Club’s annual book, Tokyo TDC Vol.28, which features some of the world’s best type-based design.

“Being recognised by Tokyo Type Directors Club is one of the highest possible achievements in typography design,” says Christchurch-based design director Chris Flack.

“We’re so proud of our work for Dalman and absolutely over the moon with the recognition from Tokyo. It’s testament, once again, that we are producing world-class design from the bottom of the globe.”

Strategy’s work has been chosen to feature alongside 438 others. More than 3100 projects were submitted by designers from Japan and around the world.

The Tokyo Type Directors Club was founded in 1987 to recognise and celebrate the best typography work all over the world. It has been producing books for almost 30 years and has become one of the leading global authorities on type design.

Flack says Strategy couldn’t have won the recognition without the trust and boldness shown by Dalman Architects.

“Richard Dalman and his team were great to work with on this rebrand; they were every designer’s dream client,” he said. Their only real directive to us was to do something bold and unique which conveyed the many facets of the firm’s architectural work.

“They had an immense amount of trust in us to deliver something which would fit the bill and the relationship has been built up on a great foundation of mutual respect for each other’s craft. We continually pushed each other to get a result we were extremely proud of.”

Of the work chosen to feature in the book, around 130 will be selected to be displayed at an exhibition in Tokyo in April.
