Method gives Techweek a global makeover

AUCKLAND, Wednesday: Techweek has undergone a fresh brand transformation which aims to better reflect its position as NZ’s flagship tech festival, and its vision to have the country recognised as a home of innovation that’s good for the world.

Techweek19, will feature many events nationwide from Monday 20 May to Sunday 26 May 2019 (scroll down for the website).

Techweek brand, comms and marketing manager Courtney Peters said: “This project was our opportunity to refresh Techweek’s brand to reflect its importance as a nationwide, inclusive festival of innovation.

“There are no other tech festivals in the world that unite an entire country through an open event platform like this one, and we wanted the visual identity to tell that story better.

“The new brand has been created by Auckland creative innovations agency Method, who are well versed in the power of technology to tell and shape stories. They saw the vital role that Techweek plays in strengthening New Zealand’s tech ecosystem.

“With important partners all over New Zealand holding events as part of Techweek, and making use of the brand, Techweek needed a more flexible and more distinctive identity system with a suite of easy to use assets.

Samantha Ramlu said: “We love Techweek so we jumped at the opportunity to rebrand it in a way that more effectively showcased what makes it special. But we also knew how important it was to create a recognisable and easily usable brand for all the partners.”

For Method, it was about elevating the brand to reflect the success of the growing festival. “Techweek has grown up, from a one off event into a world-class festival, and really come into its own,” she said. “So we wanted something that made an impact and could stand proudly alongside other festivals globally.”

Courtney Peters says she is very happy with the rebrand process and the outcome. “Techweek is focused on tech and innovation, but at heart it’s really about New Zealanders and our unique way of doing business that can change the world,” she said.

“We were looking for a digital-focused agency that understood this and Method was the obvious choice. They are already a key player in New Zealand’s tech ecosystem, creating award-winning work. The team were brilliant to work with – they have a really collaborative, open way of doing things which made the whole process so enjoyable.

It’s a busy time for Ramlu, who has just been named a guest speaker at the Mumbrella Sage independent agencies conference, set to take place in Sydney next week (see next story).

In 2012, technology industry association NZTech began a Tech Innovation Week to coincide with the Hi-Tech Awards, to build enthusiasm around new technologies being developed in New Zealand. The event’s success led NZTech to join forces with Auckland’s economic development agency, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (Ateed), to produce TechweekAKL in 2016 – a festival of innovation ecosystem events. In the last two years, the festival has continued to build momentum – growing from 55 events in Auckland to 540 events running across the country in 2018. 2019 will be the third iteration of the nationwide festival.
