A new, local monthly newspaper designed for the over-50s market will hit the streets of Christchurch and its outer regions this Monday 8 May.

Multimedia Publishing’s The Senior Citizen will be free, with 16,000 copies distributed monthly via key drop points such as sporting clubs, retirement villages and community facilities.

“After substantial research, Multimedia Publishing realised there is an opportunity in the market for a local publication designed to reach this ever-expanding demographic,” said freelance writer Patrick Whittle, who has been appointed editor.

“The growth numbers associated with New Zealand’s over-50s demographic have various implications for infrastructure, housing, health care and support that will effect commercial entities as well as government bodies,” Whittle said.

“Individuals within this demographic generally have a high expendable income, the deciding influence on household purchases, as well as increasingly more time on their hands the older they get.

“Over-50s will be spending more on groceries, clothing, footwear, housing-related products, health, transport, travel, recreation and culture and therefore have a huge marketing potential.”

The newspaper will feature sections on local news, money talk, looking back, health, travel, leisure, entertainment, sport, politics and puzzles.

Whittle says the publication will focus on both local content and national issues that engage and inspire readers as a voice for their concerns and aspirations.

“This is a truly unique offering – not just with this demographic – but also as a free newspaper with 300 strategic drop points and strong POS presence,” he said.

The Senior Citizen is sure to resonate.”
