The New Zealand Herald took out the trifecta at the 2015 Canon Media Awards on Friday night, awarded Newspaper of the Year and Best Daily Newspaper (over 30,000 circulation) while its digital stablemate nzherald.co.nz was judged Best Website.

Plus, Herald editor Shayne Currie was awarded the Wolfson Fellowship – and with it, the opportunity to attend Cambridge University.

Fairfax Media also came away smiling, with the Sunday Star-Times winning Weekly Newspaper of the Year, Taranaki Daily News won Newspaper of the Year (up to 30,000 circulation) and NZ House & Garden won Magazine of the Year.

The Community Newspaper of the Year award went to Queenstown’s Mountain Scene, published by Allied Press.

The awards, now in their 41st year, recognise excellence across newspaper, magazine and digital media and were celebrated in Auckland by a record attendance of 520. Staged by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association, the awards attracted 1600 entries encompassing 8000 individual pieces of work across 64 categories assessed by 39 judges in four countries.

Newspaper judges Australian editorial chiefs Campbell Reid and Garry Linnell said The New Zealand Herald’s individual editions, sections, magazines, community programmes and ambitious journalism made it a world class newspaper.

“The thing that sets the Herald apart is its depth. It is a high quality newspaper from page one to page 101 and beyond. It doesn’t have a weak link. Its journalism can break an international scoop one day and be unapologetically parochial the next, but its hallmark is always the rigour and quality of its information.”

Commenting on the Best Weekly Newspaper award won by the Sunday Star-Times, the judges said: “Deeply committed investigative journalism, agenda-setting reporting, a strong sport section, an engaging eye-catching design and sections that entertain and inform all combined to make the Star-Times a stand-out winner in this category.”

The major writing awards were evenly spread with the Herald’s Jared Savage winning Reporter of the Year and Dylan Cleaver, Best Investigation. Newspaper Feature Writer of the Year went to Charles Anderson of The Press while Magazine Feature Writer of the Year was won by Rebecca Macfie of NZ Listener.

The top cartoonist and column writing awards went to the Listener’s Chris Slane (cartoons) and the Herald’s Michele Hewitson (Columnist of the Year). The Herald’s Brett Phibbs was named Photographer of the Year.
