NZME celebrates Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

AUCKLAND, Today: NZME is celebrating Māori Language Week, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, across multiple platforms.

The NZ Herald and NZME regional papers will change their titles into te reo Māori for the week and encourage readers to learn the language. Each day, there will be video, print and digital content encouraging the use of and teaching words in te reo.

NZME ceo Michael Boggs says he’s proud to support Māori Language Week. “As one of our national languages, we are continuously doing our best to integrate the language into our company’s daily activities. We relish the chance to celebrate the language.”

The organisation is embracing the ceo’s call to action wholeheartedly – Herald Māori issues reporter Michael Neilson will take on the challenge of how much he can develop his vocabulary in one week.

He will try to use at least one Māori sentence in every conversation and will keep readers up to date on his progress.

The Whanganui Chronicle announced on Friday the inclusion of the ‘h’ into their titles, a change that took effect this week and will remain permanent.

ZM, Flava and The Hits are switching out their logos for the week to designs inspired by Māori artwork. There will be engaging video content from the brands across the week.

Internally, NZME employees will be marking Māori Language Week with intranet videos with tamariki (children) reading Māori myths and legends in te reo, and digiscreens and posters teaching the Māori equivalent of everyday words used in the workplace.

Earlier this year, the Herald updated their policy to include macrons both in print and online, and continues to look at ways to incorporate te reo.
