AUCKLAND, Tuesday: Outdoor media company Phantom Billstickers has recruited Gareth Bayliss from business capability development specialist The Icehouse to take up the new role of client director.

Bayliss, who started at Phantom yesterday, says it was an unexpected career change but an opportunity that was too good to ignore.

“I started my career on the stage in the UK and have worked as an actor in the UK and New Zealand,” he says.

“Performance and creativity have always inspired me, and you could say the same about Phantom Billstickers. They have strong roots in the arts world, where you have to deliver every time and never let the audience down.”

In his new role Bayliss will be supporting Phantom’s five-strong sales team and developing partnerships with clients as well as driving new business. He first got to know Phantom’s business while working with them as a client, when he recognised some kindred spirits.

“I admired the culture of innovation and accountability at Phantom Billstickers,” says Bayliss. “It’s a hard blend to get right, but they consistently do. When the chance came to join as client director, I jumped at the role.”

McDonnell says Phantom Billstickers wouldn’t be the organisation it is today without The Icehouse.

“Like thousands of other successful Kiwi SMEs, we’ve worked with them to grow our capability,” says McDonnell.

“So when the opportunity came up for Gareth to join our crew as client director it seemed like a natural evolution and the perfect fit for Phantom Billstickers’ culture.

“Gareth doesn’t just know about ads – he’s appeared in them. His unique career path is the perfect complement for Phantom Billstickers’ diverse customer base. His lived experience will enable us to add value for customers across industries and artistic disciplines.”

Bayliss worked as an actor on stage and TV in Britain while managing pubs and working as a teacher.

He movedved to New Zealand and got into sales before joining The Icehouse as a customer growth partner and being promoted to sales director. Lured to Phantom by the promise of free theatre tickets (kidding).
