AUCKLAND, Today: The Devil Wears Prada 2 has strutted into New Zealand cinemas with serious box office confidence, 20 years after the original gave everyone fashion feelings.
Across its Wednesday to Sunday opening weekend, including previews, the film pulled in $1.66 million at the New Zealand box office.
That makes it the biggest opening weekend for a film since December last year, and the second biggest comedy opening of all time locally, behind 2023’s Barbie.
Premium cinema demand also helped give the sequel a stylish lift, with audiences clearly keen to watch the chaos unfold on the biggest screen possible.
The film recorded 72,500 admissions, showing strong appeal among original fans, new audiences, and probably a few people who still quote Miranda Priestly at work.
“Off the back of record-breaking openings and the strongest Easter period in six years, admissions continue to trend upward, which puts brands in a strong position to show up on the big screen, particularly with a strong slate still to come.” – Matt Tremain, Sales Director of Val Morgan Cinema New Zealand
It also delivered 55% of its total audience from the hard-to-reach P25–54 demographic, with a 65% female skew across the opening weekend.
The result adds to a strong start for cinema in 2026, following several record-breaking openings over the past four months. New Zealand cinemas also recorded their strongest Easter period since 2019, while overall audience admissions are up +9% year-on-year.
Growth is being driven across key audience groups, including P14–39 and ABs, giving advertisers more reason to keep the big screen in the mix.
Matt Tremain, Sales Director of Val Morgan Cinema New Zealand said, “The Devil Wears Prada 2 is proving to be a major cultural moment for cinema, and a clear reflection of the market’s current momentum.
