The Sistine Chapel comes to Ponsonby

New downtown Auckland agency Crave has plunged into the worlds of art and social media to transport Ponsonby Rd’s Chapel Bar & Bistro customers to Rome’s Sistine Chapel.

Chapel has undergone a revamp in the past two months and as part of the process, owner Luke Dallow engaged Crave to create something to accentuate the establishment’s irreverent style.

Created as a collaboration by Crave and artist Ross Lewis, the artwork took eight weeks to craft. The roof mural features a series of naughty cherubs caught in a mischievous clash with a mixture of Old Worlde and New World style.

From cherubs taking selfies through to fighting in champagne spray, the creative piece really heightens the sense of space within this well-known watering hole.

“With social media becoming so prevalent in the hospitality space, this mural is sure to increase the social currency of Chapel.”

The insight behind the piece was developed from an assessment of social media and what customers were sharing in the venue.

“Social Media has become an integral tool within the hospitality space, which has allowed real-time social currency for bars, clubs and restaurants,” said Crave managing director Daniel Hopkirk (a former marketing director at Virgin Australia).

“After reviewing Chapel’s social media, it appeared that 25% of the social posts were of the statue of Jesus with two guns,” he said. “This gave us the platform we needed to create something that was truly distinct and different.”

Luke Dallow said: “In true Chapel style we wanted to make people think. With social media becoming so prevalent in the hospitality space, this mural is sure to increase the social currency of Chapel.”

The roof mural will be unveiled tonight (Thursday night).
