AUCKLAND, Today: Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei, QMS and MediaWorks have joined forces to encourage the use of te Reo Māori with a digital campaign and radio competition during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2020.

From today until Sunday, Tāmaki Makaurau will see an outdoor and radio takeover to celebrate and promote the use of te Reo Māori and invite people of Tāmaki to integrate the language into everyday life.

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has worked in partnership with QMS who have sponsored a week-long outdoor campaign to help encourage the use of te Reo Māori across sites located in high traffic areas in Tāmaki.

MediaWorks have also sponsored a week-long on-air radio and social media competition on Mai FM.

“Te Reo Māori is a gateway into understanding the culture and an acknowledgement of the tangata whenua of Aotearoa.”

The billboard takeover will promote a Kupu o te rā (phrase of the day) shared each day of the week. The radio campaign encourages listeners to look out for the billboards or tune in to the Mai Morning Crew show to catch the daily kupu and call or text in for a chance to win a cash prize.

Te Kurataiaho Kapea GM Toi Whātua (Culture) for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Maia, says promoting and encouraging people to give te Reo Māori a go is important to the hapū who want to see a bigger presence of te reo Māori and culture across Tāmaki.

“As the Ahi Kaa of Tāmaki, we are proud and honoured to drive initiatives that will celebrate, promote, revitalise and encourage te Reo in Tāmaki. We want to see te Reo Māori become an integral part of our city’s identity,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to encourage non-Māori speakers to karawhiua (give it a go), use more te Reo Māori, and to encourage our fluent speakers to support those who are just starting out. Te Reo Māori is a gateway into understanding the culture and an acknowledgement of the tangata whenua of Aotearoa.”
