The numbers game

AUCKLAND, Today: Ad people from all corners of the country are emerging to pile on the misery behind M+AD’s series of redundancy news stories.

Many – like Sarah Ritchie, who yesterday estimated hundreds of layoffs in the creative comms sector – agree the numbers provided by the bigger agencies don’t throw much light on the true extent of the problem.

‘Anon’ posted on the M+AD site: “Hit it on the nail. The redundancy numbers reported have been WELL under the mark. We know of agencies who have let go of 10, 20, 30+ people thus far.”

One prominent agency person, who asked us not to publish a name, said: “The use of the term ‘single digit’ is pretty imaginative. I heard approx. 35 from one network agency alone over the last three months.”

“Are they paying off the industry press to save face?” (We wish!)

“Good to see Sarah Ritchie following up on the redundancy story. I suspect the recruitment shops are closer to the truth than any of us.”

Big’s Ant Salmon said:” Good to see Sarah Ritchie following up on the redundancy story. I suspect the recruitment companies are closer to the truth than any of us.”

On the latest round, ‘Iain’ commented: “All the Harvey Cameron redundancies have come from the Christchurch office.

“I have also never been able to locate the elusive Harvey Cameron Auckland office, or do they mean Farrimond, of which they are a 40% shareholder?”

M+AD is the only trade rag on either side of the Tasman to even attempt to document the carnage …
