Trigger traps Ricky Gervais in a Kiwi first

British comedian Ricky Gervais is following his first New Zealand Instagram account @triggerworld. In what they admit was a cheeky move, Auckland agency Trigger Marketing & Publicity yesterday morning messaged Gervais (@rickygervais) asking him to “say hi to David Brent” on Instagram.

The result was beyond their wildest dreams. Gervais got back almost immediately and started following them in return.

Ricky Gervais follows just 29 people on Instagram out of his nearly 1 million followers, and one of those is now @triggerworld. Trigger joins an exclusive group which features verified accounts like 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake.

As it happens the Ponsonby-based Trigger is currently working on Gervais’ new movie, Life on the Road, (opening in New Zealand cinemas September 1). But they say there has been no collusion behind the scenes as Trigger have had no direct contact with Ricky Gervais apart from their client relationship with the movie distributor, Entertainment One.

Trigger Marketing & Publicity Managing Director Adria Buckton said: “to be the first New Zealand account to be followed by Ricky Gervais is quite an achievement. Clearly it is quality not quantity that starts a trajectory in the Social Media space.

“Ricky followed us despite our modest audience. He must have liked our cheeky Kiwi approach. We have only been using Instagram for a short while and our focus has not been 100% on our own handles, though we do water them for growth and this is one remarkably exciting follow.

“It’s especially pleasing as this is a special area of focus for our team – helping other companies in the Social Media space.”
