AUCKLAND, Today: Everyone loves dogs, but it seems folks are on the hunt for a pet that’s more low-maintenance – quiet, no walks needed, self-grooming, and okay being solo. Kind of sounds like… not a dog, right?

Enter WHISKAS® with a quirky twist during the cat breeding frenzy: they’ve rebranded shelter cats as “Meowzers” to boost adoption. Clever, isn’t it?

The idea here? Maybe what people are really looking for in their ideal dog is, in fact, a cat. WHISKAS® is flipping the script with this campaign, especially as it rolls out in New Zealand first.

They’re getting techy with it, using smart search tricks to guide potential pet owners from doggy dreams to the meowzer.dog site. Bianca Malcolm from WHISKAS® New Zealand explains it’s all about finding homes for pets in a way that aligns with human lifestyles.

She notes, “Looking at search data, we noticed an interesting trend – people are looking for dogs that aren’t really like dogs at all. Meowzer is our way of drawing attention to this issue and encouraging responsible pet adoption in a playful way.”

“We love that, through Meowzer, the WHISKAS® brand is encouraging people to think about responsible pet ownership during this busy period.”

They’ve even got a fancy Meowzer website, using AI and matchmaking algorithms to pair humans with their ideal furry friend.

Alisha Sinclair from 9 Lives Orphanage points out the dire state of animal shelters, especially during cat breeding season. But she’s hopeful: “We know that cats too, can be man’s best friend. Cats can offer the same level of companionship but without many of the demands that come with dog ownership.

And it’s not just about clever online tactics. WHISKAS® is also getting real-life pet owners to sing the praises of Meowzers on social media. Sinclair adds, “If you’ve been putting off adopting a dog because of the work involved, or just haven’t been able to find your perfect canine match, a Meowzer could be the option for you.”

It’s all about finding the right companion, minus the traditional doggy demands.
